Description

No. 10 Wellness is based on a blend of alkalising salts with a special herbal and spice preparation, including sage, chervil, basil, fennel, anise, turmeric, parsley, and rosehip. It is designed as a complementary feed to support the daily ration when the horse’s nutritional balance may be affected by acid-forming feed components or increased physical demand. Herbal blend No. 10 is particularly suitable after strenuous competition days, long rides, endurance rides, during diet phases, and when feeding silage. It may also be used as part of a balanced nutritional routine for horses that show signs of muscular tightness, reduced suppleness, or increased skin and coat sensitivity.

What is increased acid load?

Stress, dehydration on hot days combined with physical exertion, and a one-sided diet with high grain rations and insufficient roughage, or silage feeding, can increase the demand for alkaline-forming substances in the body, especially sodium bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate is involved in the body’s natural acid-base balance. If the ration does not adequately support this balance, the horse may appear less energetic, less supple, or less willing to move. Possible nutritional signs associated with an increased acid load may include stiffness, tension, reduced mobility, sensitivity in the joints or hooves, and changes in body condition. Some horses may appear either very soft and plump or thin and lacking substance. Their general temperament may also appear tense.

Why pH balance is important for metabolism

The centre of energy production lies in the mitochondria, the so-called powerhouses of the cells. These organelles are responsible for producing ATP, adenosine triphosphate, from energy-providing nutrients such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. ATP is then converted back into ADP, adenosine diphosphate, when energy is needed.

This process depends on a balanced internal environment, including a suitable pH range. A well-balanced ration can therefore contribute to normal energy metabolism and general vitality.

How acids are buffered in the body

Sodium bicarbonate is a naturally occurring salt that plays a role in the body’s acid-buffering systems. It can be formed when feed is mixed with saliva, especially when hay and straw are chewed thoroughly.

Due to its molecular structure, sodium bicarbonate can bind protons and is involved in the neutralisation of acids produced during normal metabolism or introduced through the diet. These may include lactic acid, uric acid, and other acid-forming metabolic compounds. A balanced supply of alkaline-forming nutrients can help support the body’s natural buffering processes.

General feeding measures for acid load

Horses with a high acid load should generally be fed a diet that is low in starch, moderate in protein, and rich in fibre. Chewable roughage in the form of high-quality hay and straw is always preferable.

Silage should be used with care, as it is an acidic feed with a low pH value. Feeding oils is considered neutral. It may also be advisable to moderate grain intake in favour of high-fibre pelleted feeds, muesli feeds, or hay cubes.

Nutritional support through readily available ingredients

With the herbal and mineral mixture in Dr. Weyrauch No. 10 Wellness, the horse receives sodium bicarbonate in combination with selected herbs and mineral components. The formula is intended to support the horse’s natural acid-base balance through the daily ration.
